The Last MacDonald

A Scottish Ghost Story

This is not a book about burgers… It is the apocryphal tale of the sole McDonald survivor from the night of 13th February 1692, when the Campbells, on the orders of King William, massacred all the Glencoe McDonalds. One MacDonald escapes the massacre. Young Alain should have been at home on the night of the massacre but he arrived home in the early hours of the morning having spent the night with Catriona. He saw the Campbells, in the hours before sunrise, armed to the teeth, and in his panic, he ran away, and hid amongst the snow-covered bracken…

It is also the story of a teenage boy who is trying to fit in, which isn’t easy with a name like William McDonald. To the kids in school, he is Billy Burger and to his teachers he’s the lazy burger (at least that’s what he thinks they’re saying). But to the Two Ks – Karen is stocky and wide with arms like pistons, and Kelly is tall and thin with sharp pointed features – he is fair game. On the last day before the February half term holiday, Billy has the usual ordeal. How can he get on his bus before the Two K’s get him?

On a visit to Glencoe, on the anniversary of the massacre, Billy and Alain meet in a ghostly dream spanning over three hundred years.
