St Swithin’s Day is a two-part coming-of-age novel with a difference. It follows the adventures of Jo-Shi who is fulfilling his dream to be the Questor, leaving the darkness of The Levels to find the first signs of a renewed world, ten generations after The Devastation shut out the sun’s light and destroyed life on earth. It is a dystopian novel written for adventurers of all ages.
In Book I – The Questor – we follow the first twenty days of his adventures and see him coming to terms with the challenges presented to him on Colderth, encountering Wildlings who hunt him, and with the continuous rain that falls for forty days after St Swithin’s Day. At home in the depths of Level One his family must wait and hope, uncertain if they will ever see him again. Will Jo-Shi return with the green oak leaf and lead his people up? Or will he be trapped out there in a hostile world?
In Book II – New Order – Jo-Shi is determined to return aboard The Ark to rescue his family who will otherwise drown as The Levels start to fill up in the constant rainfall. Now he has with him a small group of young people who are determined to make a new life. It is Jo-Shi’s determination and the support he gets from the young woman Qi-So, a fellow Questor, that drives him to attempt he rescue. St. Swithin’s Day is a novel that looks at the way the powerful use their power to control the people they are supposed to serve. Armed only with purity of heart and idealistic dreams the protagonists seek to save their families from the evil of The Levellers.
