‘Sleeping’ is my eighth novel and in it I venture into the spy genre. The novel tells the story of Malcolm Lewis who is drawn into the murky world of cold war politics following a childhood visit to mid-60s Prague. There he meets Olga Khatchova, a beautiful young woman who bewitches him and changes his life for ever. Until this chance meeting, Malcolm is a young man growing up in an ordinary family, following his father as a keen philatelist, with a particular love for Russian stamps. But while Malcolm believes in this new and dangerous life, those around him – colleagues as well as family – think of him as a Walter Mitty character, giving his otherwise humdrum life as a museum archivist a touch of spice. Accidents to his wife and his father lead him to believe that he is being targeted in revenge for his work in helping the Czechs achieve independence from their Russian masters, so he abandons his young child, Daisy, leaving her in the care of her grandmother. These actions have consequences and it is a generation later that it all catches up with him.
